4 Reasons Learning What We Lack Helps Us
The desire within people is a constant thing throughout our lives. We are constantly in pursuit of something.
It is this pursuit in our lives that gives us purpose, a drive to do something.
It is our lifeblood.
It’s one of the many reasons why scarcity in our lives can help us.
I know that’s a weird thing to say, after all scarcity — or the lack of something — can prompt us to put a limit on our thinking. When we lack something it can be almost instinct for us to use it as a crutch.
You lack that money to invest in something.
You lack the equipment to work out properly.
You lack the network to have a good group of friends.
We always lack something. That won’t be changing any time soon. But as long as we use it as a crutch, we won’t grow.
Here’s how we can change our thinking around to seeing lack, or scarcity, as a boon.
Scarcity Prompts Change
Abundance is about being rich, with or without money. — Suze Orman
This is an obvious one, but even to this day we are resistant to change in our lives. We create excuses, buy into doubts, fears, and more, just to resist change.
But deep down we both know that if we must sacrifice something to have something else. One can’t become successful without it.
To grow a business properly you have to shut your social life down for a bit.
If you want a loving relationship you may need to drop your old habits and acquire some better ones.
No matter how you look at it, you need to make a change, for better or for worse, in order to fill that lack.
Scarcity Prompts Us To Think In New Ways
Abundance is not something we acquire. It is something we tune into. — Wayne Dyer
I was like many other people when it comes to money. I had a scarcity mindset. For several years I struggled to make any kind of significant income. However through that experience, it prompted me to approach things in new ways.
Instead of thinking that money is a limited resource, there is an abundance of it.
Furthermore, there are many ways for me to acquire it, but only a few ways I’ll actually do to get there.
The whole experience taught me that I needed to change my entire thinking. From that, it gave me new possibilities and ways to approach problems.
Scarcity Helps In Understanding What We Value
Being broke is a temporary situation. Being poor is a state of mind. — Mike Todd
Of course what we lack and think is a problem, the solution is something that we value.
If we feel lonely, it’s clear we want to be around people and value that.
If we want to be healthier we value a healthy lifestyle and working out.
But how we go about those things matters as well.
There isn’t some general all-around workout. We have workouts designed to tone your body, burn fat, build muscle mass, and more. Even these tiny things tell us what it is that we value.
This can help us in understanding ourselves because the truth is we are all different.
When it comes to money, some of us want large houses.
I’m perfectly happy with an apartment or an average house.
We can only discover this by setting goals around what we lack and pursuing them.
Scarcity Provides A Reminder
I’ve said in the past that many negative aspects in our lives can cause us a lot of pain.
Excuses stifle productivity and stall us.
Fears keep us pinned down, completely paralyzed if we let it.
Doubt creates hesitation and can slowly break us down from the inside.
But as I mentioned in the past, how we view these things can determine whether we grow from it or not.
Yes a scarcity mindset doesn’t help people and the last thing people really want is to place limitations on themselves.
But if we can work past that and put an effort to make changes and approach scarcity from a different angle, this can serve as a reminder to us all.
Negative aspects are perceived as negative because we allow it.
This is no easy task, but I believe figuring out what we lack and not using it as a crutch to not do anything can…
Prompt us to take action;
To challenge ourselves to think differently and;
To identify what we value.
To your growth!
