Mastering one’s ego.

As someone who has been in the self-help industry since 2015, I’ve seen a lot of life hack type of articles. Especially on particular skills that help you *win* in life. These lists are extensive and mention all kinds of different skills out there.

Some will stick to basic things like grit, persistence, resilience, drive, patience, willpower, amongst others. Little do those people know a lot of those tend to be granted to those in privileged positions.

Others will try to be wittier and mention similar skills and use examples from famous people.

And others will take literal life skills…


It’s nice to hear of people’s success, but these stories present various underlying problems.

Success stories. Immediately you think of people like Richard Branson, Oprah Winfrey, Elon Musk, J.K. Rowling, and Stephen King. People who made empires from nothing.

You might also think of people who lost a tonne of weight like Adele, Drew Carry, Chris Pratt, or Rebel Wilson.

Whatever you pursue in life, someone has done it before. Maybe not exactly how you would, but their journey is inspiring nevertheless.

It makes you want to pursue it in earnest. If that person can do it then why not you? It’s overall external motivation to push you forward while you find other reasons…


A publication on life lessons learned.

As I’ve been going through my self-improvement journey, there are many things I’ve learned. About the industry that I write it, what works and what doesn’t, and life lessons.

And one of the things that I’ve come to learn is just how much advice can be misleading. Some of it requires a certain level of privilege. Others rely on mysticism or have little proof of it being effective.

It’s pretty bad and sad to see that.

And ways you can modify affirmations to work for you

When I first entered the self-help world, there were a number of things that I was exposed to. One of the many that I’m bringing up this time is watching a video on Facebook of a girl looking in the bathroom mirror and her dad holding her.

It was a daily ritual where her dad said a few lines and then she repeated after him.

“I am strong.”

“I am smart.”

“I am brave.”

The list goes on and it’s adorable to watch. You might even get inspired by the whole thing. I know I felt that.

How we can expand our minds for more empathetic behaviour.

About three months ago my cousin turned to me complaining about how a game he plays turned out. This behaviour was something he displayed on occasion but he brought it up more frequently around this time.

I reacted in a way any typical person would. I rationalized it (“that is a possibility”) and subtly dismissed his emotions entirely.

I did this because I was annoyed with his constant badgering over something that was insignificant. Furthermore, I saw this as a minor problem that didn’t even need addressing.

A case for being more open to people.

In the span of a few days, I’ve received two situations where people just assumed certain facts about who I am.

The first was in a comment replying to a statement I made about a fellow writer’s post (Shannon Ashley). I remarked in Shannon’s post about how the self-improvement industry has evolved into a state where people are only looking to gratify themselves while disguising themselves as selfless individuals trying to help people.

How unintentional self-care keeps our mental state intact.

Our routines are not something that we think that much about any longer. Even though there are plenty of articles out there talking about various morning routines or specific activities that can make your life better, we don’t often think about them until those articles mention them.

I say this because one streamer that I watch on a regular basis brought up a very important aspect of life.

Sometimes being #2 or #3 is smarter, better, and more liberating.

A few weeks ago I watched John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight show where he spoke about Asian Americans. In the video, he broke down how Americans have clumped together with the various ethnicities that comprise the term, their history, and all-around aimed to bring understanding to his viewership.

Sometimes it pays to question what you know about meaning.

One of the big questions that we look for in life is “what is our purpose in life?” We dwell on trying to figure out what our purpose in life for so long that our world revolves around it.

Not being able to find our purpose means living a life that we’re dissatisfied with. Many people consider those without purpose coasting through life and not amounting to much — if anything at all. We eventually die with regrets and dreams of things that we wish we could’ve done.
