A Title Isn’t Everything
How moving beyond your title can open new opportunities and growth.
Today, one of my mentors is heading to Chicago to do a workshop on pricing written work. He’s done this topic plenty of times before, so the issue isn’t a matter of engaging or whether he can deliver it.
But rather the issue can be with the audience.
Since he’s covered the topic so often, saying the same thing gets stale fast for him. So this time he’s mixing it up — for his sake — by providing various scenarios where people need to determine what pricing would be appropriate.
This new angle is fresh and forces people to think more rather than pay attention to the speech and jot notes.
But that’s where the problem rests.
Because as much as we’ve learned the importance of broadening our skills and having a diverse wheelhouse, some people cling to their titles. It’s as if the titles alone define them and they are restricted to that type of work.
“I’m an editor, therefore, I can’t write articles.”
“I’m a social media manager, therefore, I can’t handle anything other than social media accounts.”
“I’m the manager of a bank, therefore, my job isn’t to look after other workers well being from…
