I know in the case of the US there are congressional hearings which do bring in key individuals for hearings on various issues, though I don't think anything beyond a stern talking is done. The issue with so much politics - especially in the Western part of the world - is that corporations have paid government officials to be there. Until government isn't funded by wealthy donors (but rather taxed instead) I think there will continue to be these issues.
