But I think to some extent there are some outside elements that are steering people through those steps. For those of us who don't think critically or do self-introspection, they are led down by other people who claim they know the truth and perpetuate these ideas.

For sure, they are fascists and what they are spouting about is fascism, but people aren't initially fascist until they've been exposed to it enough and over time adopt those ideologies. I think that more with regards to conspiracy theories and the allure of them. We don't believe in those conspiracy theories at first, but those theories can be depressing rabbit holes that lead us to insane conclusions.
