Pens aren't positioned as an innovative technology though. You don't see the CEO of Parker Pens standing in front of a crowd every year saying they released a new form of pen. The extent of their innovation is the pens that can be used on touch screens. Smartphones however are small computers. Their potential is far more extensive.

The point I was making is the fact that Apple seems to be wanting to grow and make more money so they release a new smartphone every year. They focus on the quantity of the items over the quality. A lot of businesses tend to do that while also stomping out any competition.

It's more of the positions that are designed to perform active stalling of competition (and thus innovation) and keep the status quo that I say are pointless.

The employees at Parker Pens shouldn't be fired, but let's say some at Parker Pens are there for the express purpose of stomping out any other pen company from forming. If they're creating man-made barriers to entry and growing a pen company, those people are in pointless positions because it doesn't achieve anything.
