Self-Care: The Trends We Shouldn’t Care About
Just like self-help, there are traps everywhere.
As someone who is hopefully optimistic about the industry that I’m in, part of me is glad about the trend in self-care. Whether it’s access to therapy or more people being mindful of their mental and physical state I’m glad that people are being so considerate of themselves.
After all, having strong self-awareness can help you to focus on what you need to do and where you want to go in life. It’s a solid check against the flashy and high highs that many self-help gurus try to shove in our faces at all times.
But at the same time, I can’t help but see the various trends self-care has and shake my head at them for one reason or another.
Some are not at all helpful. Others waste your time and money or get you nowhere and make you an even worse person.
Much like with any piece of advice offered in self-help, there’s going to be hit or misses no matter what. When there are hundreds of voices telling you to do one thing or other, it’s hard to parse together what one should be doing.
This is all on top of the fact that every person’s view of self-care is different and there’s no “ultimate method” of self-care to follow.
