Sometimes The Past Is The Answer
You know the familiar saying:
“Don’t look behind you, you’re not going that way.”
It’s a quote that hasn’t been told to me directly, but there are many quotes that are like this.
That is that they make no sense at all.
I mean, I understand the concept of this quote. We shouldn’t be dwelling on the past or living in the past if we are to progress. It’s to suggest that the past methods no longer work in today's society.
The past in this light is painted as a bad thing, and to be honest, the past isn’t all that. The past is still the past and there is nothing wrong with it. At least not entirely.
Old systems and machines need replacements and the prolonged use of them can cause a number of problems. We see that in our education system where it’s well over 100 years old. Not to mention business practices and mindsets that were dated back to boom years in the 1980s in terms of practices. Those systems and mentalities still exist today.
But that’s not to say that our own pasts are worth updating. In fact, it’s impossible to do that. Our past is the past and while it doesn’t define who we can become, it does describe our current state of mind.
This is important for a number of reasons because, in order for us to grow, we need to have a grasp of our past. We need to understand the sequence of events that have led us here. From our mistakes to our triumphs, this can all be boiled down to habits, mindset, and our actions.
It’s for this reason why it’s instrumental that we look back at our pasts and to extract information from it. After all, this is what our past really deserves. Not to dwell on it, but to understand it and grow from it.
Our past is a valuable tool that shouldn’t be dismissed simply because “we’re not going that way.” It’s an important aspect of our own growth, development, and mindset. Our past is a way of telling us what we should be doing next and focusing on in the future.
Nothing more, nothing less.
To your growth!
