That is a really good point Kirstin. Though I personally think that analogy is more attributed to popular and more mainstream forms of self-help. I think those lower on the totem pole have different versions of self-help.

That much is clear to me as I know some self-help publications focus on practical advice and value articles that have done research and back up claims rather than focus on the mysticism of it all.

I agree that people themselves aren't to blame but rather the system that's been created and enforced that is more problematic. As the scope increases, there are more who need help but they face other problems that self-help coaches don't seem to offer much help with.

That's mostly why I too am leaning more towards the same field as you.
