I got an unexpected phone call the other day. Checking the ID display on my phone, I answered immediately.

It was a personal trainer I was working with when I used to go to a local gym. During my last handful of months, we were going through training camps and the trainer was looking to flesh out exercise regimens that anyone could use.

And we were his test subjects.

It was a great idea since there has been a great deal of people who paid a lot for personal training and weren’t getting the results they were looking for. So to have a trainer being able to actually guide someone — regardless of health goals and body composition — through a sequence of training would be fantastic.

The phone call amounted to a reconnection and an outline of that plan. But there was one particular thing I wanted to highlight about that conversation.

It was how my personal trainer ended up with sore arms after doing push-ups of all things.

Being an accomplished personal trainer and former body builder, it’s hard to imagine someone like him getting sore from this. But as he explained to me, it had been a year since he did any push ups and so his first time back, he decided to…
