What Is The Real Hour Of Champions?
There is nothing like getting a good night’s sleep am I right?
Well, maybe not so much for very specific cases of people.
You know those people.
Those people who wake up at 5 in the morning and talk about why every person should do it.
They think it’s like the next big thing since avocado toast.
Those are the serious people. You wish you could be like them. They’re hardcore waking up that early and getting shit done like no tomorrow.
And yet I bet they are putting a filter on how awesome their life is since waking up that early.
Because once you start looking into the meaning and what it actually takes in order to get up that early in the morning every day, it can be taxing.
Our Bodies Are Like Animals
Much like personality tests or really any kind of test of identification, Dr. Michael Breus (aka “The Sleep Doctor), categorizes our sleep patterns into four quadrants.
You’re either a:
- Lion (Super early morning person who gets up with the sun)
- Bear (Your regular sleep cycle of waking up at a normal time and going to bed at night at a normal time)
- Dolphin (Hardly ever sleep. At least half their brain is always on.)
- Wolf (Your traditional night owl who is far more productive at night)
Our biologies since birth determine that sort of sleep cycle and to go against something like that can be dangerous. After all, lack of sleep gives us lack of focus, poorer health, a weaker heart that can lead to some fatal situations.
Chances are the people who do have a lifestyle like this and don’t tote it like some badge of honour (like Richard Branson who consistently gets up at 5 am) is probably built like a Lion.
Waking Up Early Gives You Lack Of Sleep
I know this is an obvious one but hear me out on this one.
If you are someone who wants to be waking up at that ungodly hour of 5 am, chances are you may be following other principals of this “fantastic mindset.” Things like working 18– 20-hour work days or pushing 100+ hour work weeks.
Claiming all that shit is for the #entrepreneuriallife and #hustle.
Even Arnold Schwarzenegger said once to get more sleep in the 5 hours you are sleeping or something!
But lack of sleep, or forcing yourself to sleep less isn’t the proper sacrifice as an entrepreneur and certainly not as a writer. Some people may very well think that lack of sleep is some sort of sacrifice to become an entrepreneur.
I don’t blame them because we see so many “serial entrepreneurs” who talk about their hustling at midnight and then waking up at 5 am THAT DAY and do it all over again.
It must be exhausting.
And no amount of min-maxing your sleep tactics is going to help you get more sleep.
5 hours of sleep is 5 hours of sleep.
Trust me, I studied accounting AND I passed grade one math.
You’re Going To Lost Productivity For Nothing
What’s even more of a kick in the teeth is what you are getting from this “sacrifice” is literally next to nothing.
Not only are you waking up at some unnatural time, but you are doing this based on other peoples personal experiences.
Russell Foster, who did a Ted Talk on sleep and is a neuroscientist, said there is no tangible benefit in productivity for those who wake up earlier.
There was another study that was done that monitored people who had been awake for 17 to 19 hours and found that their reactions were similar to those who had 0.05 percent blood alcohol concentration. In fact, some people were even slower reacting than those under that level of influence.
Imagine trying to do ANY kind of work while in that state.
You’ll Also Be Unhappier
I said a lot of those people who wake up at 5 am have probably put a filter up and this is part of that reason. The findings that Russell Foster found not only did nothing for productivity, but it actually made people more unhappy.
This isn’t that big of a surprise as so many of these personalities make videos or posts and obviously we’ve grown to be masters at filtering things out.
Not every person is willing to take a selfie while their eyes are bloodshot and they’re cosplaying as one of the Walking Dead. Except they’re not trying to be.
Instead, they want to be selling the whole vibe of being up early and looking fantastic and brimming with energy.
We’ve got filtering down to a science. But that isn’t to say that the person is lying. Like I said, some people can actually function on 5 or 6 hours of sleep. The numbers are dangerously small.
But for the rest of the world, people who are pushing themselves to have less sleep and say “all is well” may be lying to themselves and others. Maybe they are one of those special people who can.
But I find it odd that people would show that off like it’s some kind of award. Much like how we glamourize the entrepreneur today.
It’s simply more fuel to that fire and it’s not needed.
The Real Sleep Schedule Of Champions
If you are looking for the answer to how much sleep you should have I’ve got one word for you:
Enough sleep that you don’t look half dead.
Enough sleep that you are properly function, motivated and energized.
Enough sleep that you can be authentic with your life so you don’t need to lie to your readers, fans, and followers that you are some Up-at-5-am champion.
For me, that’s 8 hours and waking up with the sun already rising up on a cool summer morning. For you that’s different.
