Who Do You Think You Are?
A single question but deep meaning.
I’m a writer.
I’m an entrepreneur.
I’m a person who values other people and wants to help grow people.
I’m a grower.
I’m an achiever.
I’m a winner.
I’m all these things and more.
On the surface, a basic question is simply that. But digging deeper, it allows us to discover much about ourselves. Our path, lifestyle and more.
Who do you think you are?
It’s a simple question, but it can mean so much in today’s society. We live in a world with standards and double-standards, where we stereotype people based on personality traits. We quantify everything but also think people ought to act a certain way or look a certain way.
These opinions didn’t spring from anywhere. It came from other people and their expectations of you. And if you care so much about them, you would strive to meet those expectations.
It’s for this reason why who we associate with — whether online or in real life — will drive an impact and change our lives. For better or for worse.
But it all comes back to that question. Because who we think we are may not be our reality. And instead, we feel stuck, lost, or confused about our own identity. I’m not just talking about gender or sexuality, I’m talking about personality and every aspect of our lives.
When there is a disconnection, we feel unhappy. I know this because when I was striving for my accounting degree and finally got it, I didn’t care for it. I wasn’t excited. There was no sigh of relief.
Because at the time, I understood that who I thought I was wasn’t who I really think I am.
I moved past it, like a chapter in a book, and began anew.
And while some people think I should’ve pursued that, I know myself better now. I know who I am and who I should strive to be. And how I achieved that was by looking at my life.
While all of our opinions, views and more are passed down by other people, the main thing that’s important is whether or not you will allow that to happen.
Are you happy with becoming an accountant or any other profession?
Are you happy with travelling and seeing the world?
Are you happy with what you value right now?
And if the answer to some of those questions is no, then you need to ask yourself this one question:
Who do you think you are?
To your growth!
