Why Am I Writing Daily

The Daily Grind #5

If you’ve been on Medium for any length of time, one thing you’ll find around here is the number of articles revolving around the concept of daily writing.

For sure there are champions who push for something like this.

From Gary Vaynerchuk telling us to be constantly spitting out content. Even Jon Westenberg produces a fair bit of writing daily.

But at the same time there are many others who say all the same that daily writing makes no sense.

And they certainly have some compelling reasons.

It can be difficult to create topics, give your stories meaning, not to mention it can be difficult to get noticed.

This has for some time conflicted me time and time again in my writing career. But I feel now I can properly explain why this is the best way for me.

Here is why I write so damn much.

It Feels Natural

I completely understand the reasons why we should be avoiding daily writing. It’s another article to be added to the pile of practically endless information. But daily writing is natural for me.

Ever since I started writing it has been this way.

I have either written and published for myself, and now for other people on a daily basis.

Writing every single day is part of my routine because it feels natural.

Missing a day where I’m not writing feels weird by this point. Even the thought of taking a break from writing feels weird to me.

I Don’t Care If It’s Bad

Yes. We writers can produce bad writing. I am no exception. In fact, back in March, I stumbled on one of my old written works and I can’t help but laugh at it.

It’s a fucking terrible piece of writing.

But it makes me smile at how awful it is.

True we can create articles that are devoid of meaning and add nothing to the conversation. But I believe that is only on the surface.

Each piece that we put together has some kind of attachment to it.

Something compelled us to write it.

It’s for that reason why I don’t care about the outcome. I want to know how I feel when I write. Whether I think the piece is silly or pointless I take the time to ask why.

I make adjustments as need be.

Writing daily can help with that.

If you are at a point where you think everything you write is pointless, perhaps look at your writing and what you are writing about.

Maybe this field isn’t for you.

Perhaps you can shift your voice.

Or even find a new motivation to write content.

A break can be the answer, but also more writing can be just as viable.

I’m Not Writing To Be Famous I’m Writing Because It’s Therapeutic

Writing has been a theme in my life for several years. I used to have a journal where I wrote once in a while about my day. I lost it, but it helped on some level.

I eventually wrote more personal things around college for myself. This helped me to cope with my emotions and understand myself on a deeper level.

After university, I began writing professionally. It was still sloppy work but I still wrote to discover myself. But at the same time to help those around me who need it.

I write daily still for that reason. It’s my desire to help people as I have helped myself learn and grow over the years. Writing is second nature to me and to skip a day and not write something is simply not possible.

Some might think it’s a problem, but I don’t think so.

Writing Is…

  • Writing has helped me to process the day and to record a journey of what I’m going through. I’m in no short supply of writing material.
  • Writing is a core piece of who I am as a person. I’ll admit there will be weaker pieces. However they are not devoid of meaning to me. In the end, they signify a journey.
  • A journey worth living as I keep growing and improving.

This is why I write daily.

To your growth!

After months of being inactive I’ve stepped back into Instagram and started posting. I kept it simple yesterday, what with the intense heat and all. Still I worked my ass off getting all of my tasks done for the day.

My workout still needs a lot of work as you might notice in the video. But I’m confident I’ll be getting there. Everything will happen in due time as long as I’m making steady improvements forward!
